Brief report of the Tour de l’Ardèche, France, September 5-9, 2006:
Day 1 (Tuesday September 5) The opening race was a 92 K criterium
starting at Le Teil. At 25 Km to go, seven riders, including Canada’s
Erinne Willock (Victoria, BC), took a 1 minute lead. In the last and
very difficult uphill, they were caught by the peloton and Edita Pucinskaite
(Nobili) rode solo to victory with a 43 seconds lead over the second
placed rider. Saskatchewan’s Alex Wrubleski ended 4th.
Day 2 (Wednesday September 6) The first half stage in the morning
was a 3.3 K time trial in downtown Vals les Bains, with a very tight
downhill just before the finish line. Edita Pucinskaite (Nobili) won,
wiht Samplonius in 3rd position at 11 seconds, and Wrubleski in 7th
at 20".. Erinne Willock took second place of the second half stage in
the afternoon, a 91K road race around Vals les Bains (called The Grand
Prix d’Ouverture).
"Tomorrow will be a decisive stage for our Canadian riders and for the
overall rankings," highlighted Vincent Jourdain. "I will not be surprised
to see Alex Wrubleski in particular give it all." Tomorrow Friday September
8, the Tour d‘Ardèche will stage the Grand Prix de l’Ardèche Méridionale,
a 123 km road race.

e-mail from Alex on Aug 27:
I've been in France for about 4 days now. We are staying in Conches,
it's the CCA's base here.
We were in Plouay for the world cup yesterday and it was really great
there! The race was hard, people have been telling me how scary and
hard racing is in Europe, that it made the race seem way easier. I stayed
in the top 30-40 riders for the whole race, there were lots of pushing
and crashing going on. The race started splitting up on the hills by
the 3rd (out of 6) laps. By the 4th lap several riders got pulled, and
the pack split up into groups. On the last big climb (about 4 km before
the finish) I was in a break with the top 5 girls lead by Nicole Cooke.
But about 20 girls eventually caught on over the top. For some reason
I was in the front, fighting the wind for the last 2km and then about
15 girls passed me 20meters before the finish! haha won't do that again!
Anyway we will be staying in Conches for the majority of the time here,
it is actually more flat and windy than Saskatchewan, if that's possible!
We are racing the World Cup in Rotterdam September 3rd, then the World
Cup in Nuremburg September 10th, and Worlds are on the 21st(TT) and
the 24rd(RR).
see ya Alex

- July 24, 2006 - The World Masters Time Trial Challenge was
held this weekend in conjuction with the provincial 40k time trial.
We had a good mixture of riders, 33 in all. The top 5 with the best
times according to the World Masters Age Standards were Ken Orr, Frank
Matus, Rob Howse, Bob Hawboldt and Pedro Peralta-Elgueta. Seriously
good rides by these five. There were 3 others who just missed the mark.
Perhaps next year with a little more notice than was given this year
the competition will be even better. Kudos to the cyclists who took
part. Saskatchewan will be in contention again this year. Frank Matus

- Update April 27 - Hi to all; Thank you everyone for your encouraging
cards, phone calls, & e-mails. I guess I was lucky that I wasn't hurt
worse than I was but it is going to take at least another 2 months before
I will be riding again, but hopefully I will be able to catch some of
the later races this summer. Ken is my chief cook, bottlewasher, & helper
right now so will cut back on his riding some too, but hopefully not
to much. Thanks again & hope to see you at the races this summer, Muriel
