Mountain Bike Points - August 28, 2005 final

posted July 5: There have requests from riders for the Development Committee to review the interpretation of the following rule for the mountain bike point series: "In a stage race, points are only awarded for the Cross-Country Race."

Although the points guidelines published in the newsletter and on the SCA website do not state the rider must start all stages, this is the normal rule in any stage race, and has been the normal practice in Saskatchewan MTB stage races since at least 2002. Some riders attended the event believing they had to compete in the entire stage race (start all the stages) to receive series points; others, unfortunately believed they only had to compete in and finish one stage. Many who competed in the entire event felt it would be unfair if series points were awarded to those who had competed in only one stage, since those riders would be fresher for the Sunday race. We acknowledge that confusion existed. The Development Committee discussed the matter fully and agreed that in a case of confusion, established practice should be the guiding principle (Members who had competed in the race agreed to be guided by those who had not competed). There has been a mountain bike stage race every year since 2001, and each year the points have been calculated in the same way. Each year since 2002 there were riders placing in the top 3 in their category in the Cross Country stage who received no series points, because they had not competed in the other stages.

The Committee agreed to follow precedent and placed the following interpretation on the webpage:
Clarification for mountain bike points rule:

In a stage race, points are only awarded for the Cross-Country Race. Interpretation:
    - Series points are awarded to riders who complete all stages of a MTB stage race, based on their finishing order in the cross country race.
    - Riders must enter the stage race (not just the cross country race) to be credited with a "race start" (Points are accumulated based on the rider’s 4 best cross country mountain bike races. Riders must have a minimum of 3 starts to be named the series winner)

It is unfortunate that the guidelines were written in a way that allowed confusion to arise over a rule that has been in effect for several years. This will be reviewed and rectified for next year.

  • August 15, 2005 - Horizon 100 held it's first annual world masters time trial challenge on Saturday Aug 13 inless than ideal weather conditions. It was 15 C with a west wind at 26 kph and partly cloudy skies. Our five top riders, with the bigest time spread from their actual time to their age standard time on the world masters age standard chart, combined for an impressive time of -1:07:57. I think that this is a very competetive time. As of yet we have no other times to compare that to. Edmonton is holding their race Aug 28 and I have yet to find out when England and Australia are doing theirs. The five who make up our "team" are Ken Orr 17:27 (wow), Frank Matus 15:44, Jacob Dekok 15:06, Rob Howse 11:55 and Hans Roeger 7:45. Frank Matus results picture
