Hey Sask Cycling,

I just raced Kamloops Canada Cup, and I thought I’d give a quick report.

I was very happy with the race, as it ended with me in 3rd place, woohoo!  As for the race, well let me tell you, I have found a new definition for “it’s hot out”; the temperature reader in my van said 42 degrees, and I think officially it was 41 degrees (but obviously we’ll go by the van).

We raced in this weather at 2pm on a very dusty course with no shade.  The course was composed of dusty double track and the technical sections were windy, single track dust bowls. The climbs were gradual and about a minute in length, it was a flatter course.  When I was warming up in the scary heat I decided an important factor of finishing this race would be just ignoring how awful it might feel and trying to focus on the parts of my race I could control…and drinking ALOT.

I was careful not to over do it in the first half of the race because of the heat, and because of the overwhelming sensation to throw up and die.  I’m proud to report that the other Sask riders, James and Andrew, were able to tough out the heat and have good races.  I was impressed with how fast James’ flew past me on my second lap…but I didn’t tell him at the time because of the ‘throw up and die’ feeling I had going on.  When I was finishing my 3rd lap I started to feel a little better and caught a few riders over the next 2 laps. When I finished my 5th lap I was very happy to be done!

Now I have the Canmore Canada Cup to look forward to next weekend.
